AISI 4140 / DIN 42CrMo4 1.7225 / JIS SCM440 / BS 708M40 Quenching and Tempering Alloy Steel

Availability:
Quantity:

42CrMo4 / 1.7225 is the most commonly used alloy steel belongs to European standard EN10083-3 and EN10250-3. It could be used in many different industries, such as petrochemical engineering, machining and manufacturing, aerospace and automobile industry etc, so you could find its equivalent steel from different country standard, such as ASTM 4140 from American standard ASTM A29/A29M, SCM440 from Japanese standard JIS G4105, 42CrMo from Chinese standard GB/T1299, 708M40/EN19 from British standard BS970.

42CrMo4 is Cr-Mo steel series, the carbon content is 0.38-0.45%, after QT, it could acquire very good comprehensive mechanical properties, such as high strength, high tenacity and great abrasive resistance, so it is also known as quenching and tempering steel.

6:Forging processing

Put the 42CrMo4 ingot into the furnace and heat to 1100-1200℃

Forge the ingot, forging temperature should be not less than 800-900℃

Cooling in the air or in the sand after forged

7: Heat treatment

Soft annealed:

Heat 42CrMo4 steel to 680-720℃ in the furnace

Soak at this temperature in the furnace

Cooling in the furnace

Normalized:

Heat 42CrMo4 steel to 840-870℃ in the furnace

Soak at this temperature in the furnace

Cooling in the air

Quenching and tempering:

Heat 42CrMo4 steel to 820-880℃ in the furnace

Soak at this temperature in the furnace

Quench in water or oil

Temper steel at 540-680℃ in the furnace

Take out of 42CrMo4 steel from furnace and cool in the air.

Remark: The conditions given above are for guidance, at the temperatures at the lower end of the range are generally applicable to hardening in water and those at the upper end for hardening in oil.

8: Weldability

42CrMo4 steel has poor weldability. For steel material, weldability has strong relationship with carbon element, when the carbon element is more than 0.25%, the weldability will be starting to get worse. The carbon element of 42CrMo4 is around 0.42%, so the weldability is not good.

9:Application

42CrMo4 steel has excellent comprehensive mechanical properties, it is widely used in various fields. Here are some main application.

1): Crankshaft, connecting road and gears in automobile industry

2): Components in aircraft engines and landing gear system

3): Shafts, spindles and other parts in machine tools and industrial machinery

4): Gears, shafts, couplings of crusher, conveyors in mining and metallurgical equipment

5): Turbine shafts and generator rotors in power generation equipment.
