DIN 50WCrV8/1.2549 is a high-performance cold work tool steel widely recognized for its exceptional combination of wear resistance and toughness. As a key member of the tungsten-chromium-vanadium alloy steel family, its typical composition includes carbon (0.45-0.55%), supplemented by tungsten (1.70-2.20%), chromium (0.90-1.20%), and vanadium (0.10-0.20%). This composition endows the material with outstanding wear resistance, compressive strength, and excellent dimensional stability.

1.2549 steel

50WCrV8 / 1.2549 is a widely used tool steel conforming to the German standard DIN EN ISO 4957. It is renowned for its outstanding wear resistance, high toughness, and excellent hardenability.

1.2549 steel contains tungsten, chromium, and vanadium, which collectively provide high strength and resistance to tempering softening. The addition of vanadium aids in forming hard carbides, further enhancing wear resistance and toughness. This steel grade is particularly suitable for manufacturing cutting tools, cold work dies, and gauges subjected to high stress and wear.

5: Ultrasonic Test    

EN10228-3 class III or Sep 1921-84 D/D

6:Steel making & Forging processing

1): Steel making process:

  EF+LF+VD

  EAF+LF+VD

  EF+LF+VD+ESR

  EAF+LF+VD+ESR

2): Forging processing:  

Initial temperature: 1100-1130℃

Final temperature: 900℃

Cooling in the furnace or in the sand

7: Heat treatment

1): Annealed:

Heat 1.2549 steel to 770-800℃

Cool the furnace slowly at a rate of ≤ 10 °C/hour to approximately 650 °C

2): Quenching and tempering:  

Heat 1.2549 steel to 910-930℃ in the salt bath furnace

Quench in the oil

Temper steel at 170-190℃ in the furnace

Cooling in the air.

8:Application

1.2549, as an alloy tool steel, boasts excellent comprehensive properties and finds extensive applications across industrial sectors. Below are its typical specific application areas and uses:

1. Cutting Tools

  • Gear cutting tools: such as hobs, broaches, and shaving tools

  • Reamers: for machining internal splines, keyways, etc.

  • Precision tools requiring high wear resistance and toughness: reamers, taps, drills, etc.

2. Cold Work Dies

  • Punching dies: Especially for thick plate blanking and progressive die punches/dies

  • Forming dies: Such as bending dies, drawing dies (particularly suitable for high-strength sheet metal)

  • Imprinting dies: For fine surface embossing on coins, badges, jewelry, etc.

  • Cold heading dies and extrusion dies: For manufacturing standard parts like screws and bolts

3. Measuring Tools and Wear-Resistant Components

  • Precision measuring tools such as gauges, gauge blocks, templates

  • Machine tool ways, wear-resistant liners, spindles, etc.

4. Plastic Molds

For producing plastics with high abrasion resistance (e.g., engineering plastics containing glass fiber fillers), 1.2549 exhibits superior wear resistance compared to standard P20 mold steel. It is suitable for manufacturing: cores, cavities, wear-resistant inserts, guide bushings, slides, etc.
