70MnMoCr8 / 1.2824 is an air-hardening cold-work tool steel compliant with the European standard EN 17350. With a carbon content of 0.65–0.75%, this medium-high carbon alloy tool steel achieves high hardness even when cooled in air, while offering good toughness and excellent wear resistance.

Its superior hardenability, resistance to tempering softening, and dimensional stability make it a preferred choice for high-wear, impact-resistant tools. Commonly employed in heavy-duty forging dies, shear blades, forming dies, and wear-resistant mechanical components, 70MnMoCr8 delivers reliable performance and long service life in demanding tooling applications.

5: Ultrasonic Test    

EN10228-3 class III or Sep 1921-84 D/D

6:Steel making & Forging processing

1): Steel making process:

  EF+LF+VD

  EAF+LF+VD

  EF+LF+VD+ESR

  EAF+LF+VD+ESR

2): Forging processing:  

Pre-heat 1.2824 steel to 650-750℃

Initial temperature: 1050-1100℃

Final temperature: ≥850℃

Cooling in the furnace

7: Heat treatment

1): Annealed:

Heat 1.2824 steel to 760-780℃

Slowly cool in the furnace

2): Quenching and tempering:  

Heat 1.2824 steel to 825-845℃ in the salt bath furnace

Quench in air

Temper steel at 170-190℃ in the furnace

Cooling in the water or in the oil.

8:Application

70MnMoCr8 / 1.2824 is an air-hardening cold-work tool steel known for its excellent wear resistance, good toughness, and high hardenability. Its key properties make it suitable for demanding applications where resistance to abrasion, pressure, and deformation is critical. Typical applications include:

1. Cold Work Tools

  • Blanking and Piercing Dies: For medium-to-heavy duty operations

  • Forming Rolls and Dies: Used in metal forming processes

  • Shear Blades and Knives: For cutting metal materials

  • Slitter Rings: In metal coil processing lines

2. Plastic Molds

  • Injection Molds: For processing abrasive plastic materials (e.g., filled plastics)

  • Compression Molds

3. Other Applications

  • Gauges and Precision Tools

  • Machine Components subject to high wear
