NM500 wear-resistant steel is a high-hardness martensitic plate produced through quenching and tempering. Its chemical composition is precisely engineered to achieve an optimal balance between extreme abrasion resistance and adequate toughness. Key alloying elements include carbon (≤0.38%), silicon (≤0.70%), and manganese (≤1.70%), complemented by chromium (≤1.50%), molybdenum (≤0.65%), nickel (≤1.00%), and trace boron (0.0005–0.0060%) for strengthening. The addition of boron significantly enhances hardenability, ensuring uniform hardness and excellent wear performance even in thick sections.

Product Overview


NM500 steel is premium quenched and tempered wear‑resistant steel plate specified under Chinese national standard GB/T 24186‑2022. “NM” stands for abrasion resistance; the number “500” refers to its nominal Brinell hardness around 500 HBW, with actual hardness ranging 470‑540 HBW. Manufactured by quenching plus tempering heat treatment, NM500 forms uniform tempered martensite microstructure to combine high surface hardness and acceptable impact toughness. Its abrasion service life is 3‑5 times longer than ordinary carbon steel. It works as a cost‑effective alternative to imported wear steel such as Hardox 500, AR500 and XAR500 for heavy abrasive‑wear conditions. Delivered in Q+T (quenched & tempered) condition. Available with shot‑blasting, anti‑rust painting, CNC cutting, bending and pre‑fabrication service.

Fabrication & Welding


  1. Pre‑heat to 150‑250℃ for flame cutting to reduce edge hardening and cracking risk.

  2. Welding requires pre‑heating 200‑300℃, low‑hydrogen consumables and post‑weld slow cooling. Do not weld at ambient temperature directly.

  3. For cold bending, bending radius shall be at least 6‑8 times plate thickness. Hot bending recommended for thick plates.

  4. Long‑term working temperature better kept below 200℃; higher temperature will cause hardness drop and weaken wear resistance.

NM500 vs NM400 vs NM450

The main difference between NM400, NM450, and NM500 is their nominal hardness level and corresponding wear resistance.
