NM400 Wear Resistant Steel Plate

NM400 wear resistant steel is typically alloyed with carbon (C) ≤0.30%, silicon (Si) ≤0.70%, manganese (Mn) ≤1.60%, chromium (Cr) ≤1.20%, nickel (Ni) ≤0.70%, and molybdenum (Mo) ≤0.50%, with controlled phosphorus (P) and sulfur (S) content. This balanced chemical composition helps NM400 achieve approximately 400 HBW hardness, high strength, good toughness, and excellent resistance to abrasive wear, making it suitable for mining, construction machinery, quarrying, and heavy-duty wear applications.

Product Overview


NM400 wear resistant steel plate is a high-strength abrasion-resistant steel developed for equipment and structures exposed to severe wear, impact, friction, and heavy-duty operating conditions. With a nominal Brinell hardness of approximately 400 HBW, NM400 offers a practical combination of wear resistance, strength, toughness, and fabrication performance.


NM400 steel plate is widely used in mining machinery, construction equipment, quarrying, material handling systems, crushers, conveyors, dump trucks, loaders, excavators, and industrial wear parts.

NM400 vs NM360 vs NM450

The higher hardness of NM450 does not automatically make it the best choice for every application. As hardness increases, forming, cutting, welding, and machining requirements may also become more demanding.


NM400 is often selected when the application requires a balance between wear resistance, toughness, strength, and fabrication performance.


NM400 vs AR400


NM400 and AR400 are both commonly associated with approximately 400 HB-class wear-resistant steel, but they are not necessarily identical grades.


“AR400” is generally a commercial designation used for abrasion-resistant steel with a nominal hardness of around 400 HBW, while “NM400” refers to a specific grade designation used in the Chinese steel market.

Q1: What is main difference between NM400 and NM450 / NM500?

A1: NM400 features balanced hardness‑toughness with moderate cost. NM450 / NM500 delivers higher hardness for extreme heavy‑abrasion scenarios yet lower toughness.


Q2: What does NM400 stand for in steel grades?

A2: NM400 is a Chinese abrasion-resistant structural steel grade under GB/T 24186. The "N" denotes resistance to impact and abrasion, "M" indicates high-strength structural application, and "400" refers to the minimum Brinell hardness of 400 HBW. It is broadly comparable to AR400 and Hardox 400 in global standards.


Q3: Is NM400 equivalent to AR400 or Hardox 400?

A3: Yes, NM400 is widely accepted as the Chinese equivalent to AR400 and Hardox 400 in terms of hardness and wear resistance. However, minor differences exist in alloying strategies and impact toughness values. For most heavy-wear applications—such as dump truck liners, crusher parts, and excavator buckets—NM400 offers comparable performance at a more competitive cost point.


Q4: How does NM400 compare to ordinary structural steel like Q345?

A4: NM400 offers 3 to 4 times longer wear life than Q345 or similar mild steels in abrasive environments. While Q345 prioritizes formability and general structural use, NM400 is specifically alloyed for surface hardness and impact resistance. The trade-off is reduced ductility, so NM400 is not recommended for primary load-bearing structural frames without proper design consideration.
