36CrNi3MoV Alloy Steel Forging

Grade: 36CrNi3MoV Alloy Steel

36CrNi3MoV is a low-alloy Cr-Ni-Mo-V steel designed for large-section forgings in high-pressure service. Its composition features 1.20–1.50% Cr and 3.00–3.50% Ni to enhance hardenability and low-temperature toughness, 0.35–0.45% Mo for solid-solution strengthening, and 0.10–0.25% V for grain refinement and precipitation hardening. Tight limits on P (≤ 0.012%) and S (≤ 0.005%) ensure cleanliness and internal integrity, making this grade suitable for critical pressure vessel and heavy machinery applications.

Product Overview

36CrNi3MoV is a premium nickel-chromium-molybdenum-vanadium low alloy structural steel specially developed for pressure equipment. This steel grade delivers outstanding comprehensive mechanical strength, low-temperature toughness, hardenability and fatigue resistance after quenching & tempering treatment. It is the preferred material for heavy-duty ultra-high pressure vessel forgings and critical load-bearing components under harsh working conditions.

We supply customized 36CrNi3MoV steel forgings including shaft forgings, hollow cylinder forgings, ring forgings, block forgings and other special-shaped forgings. All products follow NB/T 47008-2017 specification, with complete metallurgical inspection reports and non-destructive testing (NDT) support.

200℃ ≥ 783
250℃ ≥ 774
300℃ ≥ 761
350℃ ≥ 742
400℃ ≥ 714

Additional Notes:

  • Lateral Expansion (LE): ≥ 0.53 mm

  • Alternative Impact Test: -40°C may be used upon agreement

Heat Treatment

Quenching

Austenitizing temperature: 830–860 ℃, holding fully, water quenching.

Tempering

Tempering range: 580–620 ℃, minimum tempering temperature ≥ 540 ℃, air cooling after soaking.

After QT treatment, the microstructure is uniform tempered martensite, balancing strength, plasticity and impact resistance. Stress relief annealing can be arranged after rough machining to eliminate forging and processing residual stress.

Manufacturing & Process Capabilities

  • Forging Process: Multi-directional forging (upsetting and drawing) to optimize grain flow along stress directions.

  • Quality Control: Stringent ultrasonic testing (UT) per NB/T 47008-2017 standards to ensure internal soundness.

  • Customization: Available in various dimensions (typically 8mm – 6500mm depending on shape) and configurations (round bars, blocks, custom shapes)

Available Forging Types & Delivery Terms

  • Forging Forms: Solid shaft forgings, hollow cylindrical forgings, ring forgings, rectangular block forgings, irregular special forgings

  • Size Range: Customized according to customer drawings

  • Delivery State: Quenched & tempered (QT), normalized & tempered, annealed; rough machined / black forged surface

  • Quality Certification: EN 10204 3.1 / 3.2 material test certificate, 100% NDT on request

FAQ

Q1: What standard does 36CrNi3MoV comply with?

A1: It is primarily specified under the Chinese standard NB/T 47008-2017 for “Carbon and alloy steel forgings for pressure equipment” .

Q2: How does 36CrNi3MoV compare to 35CrNi3MoV?

A2: 36CrNi3MoV offers slightly higher tensile strength (≥895 MPa vs ≥960 MPa for 35CrNi3MoV) and yield point, with a lower tempering temperature requirement .

Q3: What is the recommended heat treatment process for optimal performance?

A3: Current research indicates that austenitizing at 830-860°C, followed by water quenching and tempering at 600°C, yields a tempered martensite structure with the best balance of strength and impact resistance .

Q4: Can this material be used in low-temperature environments?

A4: Yes. It maintains excellent impact resistance at low temperatures, with minimum impact energy values guaranteed at -20°C or even -40°C upon agreement .
