EN26 826M40 40NiCrMo10-5 1.6745 Alloy Steel

Grade: BS EN26/826M40
Equivalent Steel: DIN 40NiCrMo10-5/1.6745

EN26 is a nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy steel with 0.36–0.44% carbon and 2.30–2.80% nickel, offering high hardenability and core strength in large sections. Chromium (0.50–0.80%) boosts wear resistance, while molybdenum (0.40–0.70%) refines grain structure and prevents temper brittleness. This balanced composition delivers superior fatigue resistance, making EN26 a preferred choice for heavy-duty shafts, gears, and high-pressure components.

Product Overview

EN26 is a classic nickel-chromium-molybdenum high tensile alloy steel specified under BS970 standard, also known as 826M40, DIN 1.6745 and 40NiMoCr10-5. Compared with EN25, EN26 adopts higher carbon proportion, delivering superior tensile strength and compressive resistance for parts enduring heavy surface pressure.

This grade features outstanding deep hardenability. Even large-section forgings can achieve uniform mechanical properties after quenching & tempering. Pre-hardened and tempered EN26 supports secondary surface treatment including induction hardening, flame hardening and nitriding to boost surface wear resistance. It maintains stable impact toughness within a wide tempering temperature range, greatly reducing cracking risks during post-processing.

We supply EN26 steel in multiple forms: hot rolled bar, cold drawn bright bar, forged billet, flat bar, square bar, hollow bar and steel blocks. Various surface finishes including black peel, turned, ground and polished are optional for machining and direct assembly.

Applications

EN26 alloy steel is widely adopted in heavy machinery, automotive, hydraulic equipment, energy and general engineering industries for highly stressed components:

  • Heavy-duty axles, connecting rods, torsion bars

  • Hydraulic spindles, motor shafts, gear shafts

  • Forged die holders, rams, roller shafts, heavy pins

  • High-load gear assemblies, heavy vehicle transmission parts

  • Large-section forgings requiring comprehensive strength and toughness

FAQ

Q1: What is the difference between EN25 and EN26 steel?

A1: The main distinction lies in carbon content and mechanical properties. EN26 features higher carbon content, bringing higher tensile strength, surface hardness and compression resistance. Both grades own great toughness and hardenability. Nevertheless, EN26 fits high‑stress, heavy‑compression and high‑impact parts, while EN25 is more suitable for general heavy‑duty structural components.

Q2: Can you provide MTC for EN26 steel material?

A2: Every batch of our EN26 steel comes with complete Material Test Certificates (MTC), covering chemical composition, mechanical test data and heat treatment records. Certificates conform to BS970 specification for global trade and support third‑party inspection.

Q3: Do you keep EN26 steel in stock?

A3: We maintain regular stock for standard EN26 round bars and common forged blanks for fast delivery of small‑batch and urgent orders. Oversized forgings and special custom workpieces are available with short‑lead‑time custom production.

Q4: What industries commonly use EN26 steel?

A4: EN26 is widely deployed in automotive (axles, torsion bars), oil and gas (hydraulic shafts, rams), power generation (turbine discs), construction equipment (pins, sockets), and general heavy engineering (gears, die holders, rolling mill rolls). Its exceptional strength-to-toughness ratio makes it a go-to material for safety-critical rotating and load-bearing components.
