The performance of 52100 steel is rooted in its high-carbon chromium composition, featuring carbon in the range of 0.93%–1.05% and chromium between 1.35% and 1.60% to secure adequate hardenability and carbide formation. Minor alloying additions of manganese (0.25%–0.45%) and silicon (0.15%–0.35%) aid in deoxidation and solution strengthening. Together, these elements yield superior hardness retention and robust resistance to rolling-sliding wear, which explains its widespread use in high-integrity bearing systems.

Product Overview


AISI 52100 steel (UNS G52986) is a premium high‑carbon chromium through‑hardening bearing alloy, widely recognised as the global benchmark for anti‑friction rolling‑element components. Also equivalent to DIN 100Cr6 (1.3505), JIS SUJ2 and GB GCr15, this grade delivers outstanding rolling‑contact fatigue resistance, extreme surface hardness and stable dimensional performance after proper heat treatment. We supply hot‑rolled, forged and turned 52100 steel bars with strict metallurgical cleanliness control, covering both air‑melt and vacuum‑remelt (VAR) quality grades for general‑purpose and high‑end industrial requirements.

Mechanical Properties

In the annealed condition, 52100 steel exhibits a maximum hardness of HB 207, which supports excellent machinability. Following oil quenching and low-temperature tempering, the material reaches a Rockwell hardness range of HRC 58 to 62, with uniform hardness distribution maintained between the surface and core sections even in larger cross-sectional dimensions. The tensile strength of this grade exceeds 860 MPa, accompanied by a yield strength above 520 MPa. It is important to note that this steel shows certain sensitivity to flake formation; therefore, controlled slow cooling or isothermal annealing is strongly recommended after forging or rolling operations to mitigate hydrogen-induced embrittlement risks.

Heat Treatment


  • Annealing: 790‑810 ℃ hold, slow furnace cooling, target hardness ≤217 HB

  • Quenching: Austenitize at 830‑860 ℃, oil quenching

  • Tempering: 150‑180 ℃ for 2‑4 hours, air cool, final hardness HRC 60‑66

FAQ


Q1: What is the difference between 52100 and 100Cr6?

A1: They are equivalent bearing‑steel grades. 52100 is SAE/AISI US designation; 100Cr6 (1.3505) is DIN‑EN European designation. Chemical and mechanical requirements are highly aligned for most industrial interchange scenarios.


Q2: Can 52100 steel be welded?

A2: Welding is not recommended. High carbon‑chromium composition brings high cold‑cracking tendency. If welding is unavoidable, strict pre‑heat and post‑heat procedures must be applied.


Q3: What does VAR‑melt 52100 mean?

A3: VAR (Vacuum Arc Remelting) improves steel internal cleanliness, reduces non‑metallic inclusions, further boosts contact‑fatigue life. Mainly used for high‑end aerospace, premium bearing requirements.


Q4: What surface finishes do you supply for 52100 round bars?
