In the annealed condition, 52100 steel exhibits a maximum hardness of HB 207, which supports excellent machinability. Following oil quenching and low-temperature tempering, the material reaches a Rockwell hardness range of HRC 58 to 62, with uniform hardness distribution maintained between the surface and core sections even in larger cross-sectional dimensions. The tensile strength of this grade exceeds 860 MPa, accompanied by a yield strength above 520 MPa. It is important to note that this steel shows certain sensitivity to flake formation; therefore, controlled slow cooling or isothermal annealing is strongly recommended after forging or rolling operations to mitigate hydrogen-induced embrittlement risks.

Quenching: Austenitize at 830‑860 ℃, oil quenching
Tempering: 150‑180 ℃ for 2‑4 hours, air cool, final hardness HRC 60‑66

A1: They are equivalent bearing‑steel grades. 52100 is SAE/AISI US designation; 100Cr6 (1.3505) is DIN‑EN European designation. Chemical and mechanical requirements are highly aligned for most industrial interchange scenarios.
A2: Welding is not recommended. High carbon‑chromium composition brings high cold‑cracking tendency. If welding is unavoidable, strict pre‑heat and post‑heat procedures must be applied.
A3: VAR (Vacuum Arc Remelting) improves steel internal cleanliness, reduces non‑metallic inclusions, further boosts contact‑fatigue life. Mainly used for high‑end aerospace, premium bearing requirements.
