5160 spring steel is a high-carbon chromium alloy with 0.56%–0.61% carbon for hardness and strength, and 0.70%–0.90% chromium for enhanced hardenability and wear resistance. Manganese (0.75%–1.00%) boosts toughness, while silicon (0.15%–0.35%) improves elasticity. Phosphorus and sulfur are tightly controlled as residual impurities. This balanced chemistry delivers an ideal mix of strength, toughness, and fatigue resistance, making 5160 a top choice for heavy-duty springs and high-stress components.

Product Overview


AISI 5160 is a widely used medium-high carbon chromium alloy spring steel under ASTM/SAE standard, registered as UNS G51600 in the unified numbering system. Designed for cyclic load and fatigue-prone working scenarios, this grade balances hardness, impact toughness and wear resistance perfectly, outperforming plain carbon spring steel in hardenability and anti-deformation performance.

Heat Treatment

Correct thermal processing determines the final service life of 5160 spring components, our recommended standardized workflow:


Annealing

Heat to 740–770°C, hold for sufficient soaking time, then slow furnace cooling. Reduces internal stress, improves machinability, final hardness ≤250 HB.


Quenching

Austenitizing temperature: 820–850°C, hold uniformly, agitated warm oil quenching only (forbidden water quenching). Oil cooling minimizes warping, distortion and cracking.


Tempering

Tempering temperature: 460–520°C, air cooling after holding. Eliminates quenching brittleness, locks in stable elasticity and fatigue resistance for spring parts.

FAQ


Q1: What is the difference between 5160 and 1095 spring steel?

A1: 5160 adds chromium alloy with slightly lower carbon content, much better toughness and less brittle after quenching, suitable for heavy-load springs. 1095 has higher hardness but higher cracking risk under impact.


Q2: Can AISI 5160 steel be welded?

A2: Weldability is limited due to high carbon and chromium content. Preheating and post-weld tempering are mandatory if welding is required; SMAW is the recommended welding method.


Q3: What is the maximum hardness of heat-treated 5160 steel?

A3: Peak quenched hardness reaches approximately 58–60 HRC; tempered spring state is controlled at 44–55 HRC for optimal elasticity and toughness balance.


Q4: What product forms are available for 5160 steel?
